Thank you for your email about environmental regulations after Brexit.
Together with some other colleagues in the House of Commons, I was responsible for ensuring that the European Union (Withdrawal) Act not only provided for all existing EU-derived UK environmental law to remain on the statute book after Brexit but also for there to be a new, independent watchdog able to take the place of the European Commission in ensuring that successive governments translate the fundamental environmental principles (which will themselves now appear on the face of the new Environment Bill) into proportionate policy measures. This new body will have the power to take the Government to court if it is not carrying out those policies.
I am currently working with parliamentary colleagues and ministers to ensure that these important advances are fully reflected in the new Bill. I am also a signatory to the Greener UK Environment Charter, which sets out the ambitions that many of us have for this Bill.
