European Union (Withdrawal) Bill

Thank you for contacting me about the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill.

It is clearly the intent of this legislation that it should be used only to achieve such changes as are necessary to remove absurdities following the exit of the UK from the EU.

Clearly, there will be some references in EU law that have to be changed in order to avoid such absurdity, and the drafting seems to me to be about as good as we are going to be able to get from that point of view.

However, I do accept that Parliament will need to have some mechanism for establishing whether the Delegated Powers are being used in the way that the Bill envisages.

I shall hope to speak at the Second Reading Debate and to make this point in some detail.
