NHS and social services

Thank you for your email.

I am very conscious that, despite recent increases in funding, the social care system is under increasing pressure as the number of frail elderly people increases.  This is in itself a major problem – and insufficient levels of domiciliary care are also contributing to the pressures on the NHS.

Accordingly, I have made common cause with MPs across the parties represented in the House of Commons, and have put forward an Early Day Motion with Frank Field, calling for the establishment of a new National Fund financed out of hypothecated taxation in order to provide an adequate and progressively and increasing and predictable stream of funding for both the NHS and adult social care.

I think we have to recognise that this will involve some increase in taxation as we go forward.  But my own conclusion, in common with many MPs on all sides of the House of Commons, is that this is now inevitable.
