Thank you for your email of 1st February about the campaign currently being mounted by SAS to reduce the use of plastics in Parliament.

I have a firm rule of not participating in any such campaigns, because I found that this can all too easily be used by those running campaigns to imply support for measures or propositions of which the supporter was not aware at the time of signing up to the campaign.

However, I think the basic principle that Parliament should seek to eliminate single-use plastics from the Parliamentary Estate is a very sensible one – both because it will in itself be a not insignificant contribution to the reduction in plastic disposals and also (and probably even more importantly) because this will send out a message about how seriously Parliament takes the problem of unnecessary use of plastics.

I will therefore support the measure to achieve this aim in Parliament.
